Outdoor dining will continue to top consumers' list of outdoor living activities, according to new survey results from the NPD Group and Easy Analytic Software Inc. (EASI). Eight in 10 consumers say they entertain at home, both indoors and out, according to "Outdoor Entertaining Trends 2010: Consumers Bring the Indoors Out," by NPD Group. Twelve percent of consumers indicated that they had entertained at home more in 2010 than in past years, and 37 percent said they entertained about the same amount as in the past.

EASI also forecasts that U.S. outdoor dining set sales will increase to nearly $3.2 billion in 2015, up from $2.9 billion in 2010, and the majority of sales will come from members of Generation X. The generation comprises 31 percent of the households who say they'll buy in 2011, "planning to purchase at a rate 1.6 times higher than their presence in the population," according to Casual Living's "2011 Consumer Buying Trends: Dining Sets" report.

With the wide range of designs and constructions available, your customers can achieve a rustic or contemporary look for their outdoor dining areas with a variety of weather-resistant furniture. Achieve increased sales by pairing throw pillows and cushions, featuring the newest trends in outdoor fabrics, with your dining sets.

Dining sets in neutral colors, such as tan and gray, will be most popular with consumers this year. Neutrals are trending toward cool taupes, charcoals and soft grays, and away from the recently popular browns, explains Gina B. Wicker, design and creative director for Glen Raven Inc., manufacturer of Sunbrella® fabrics. "While the tendency is toward a cooler ground, these are not the cold, almost-metallic silvers that are often viewed as ultramodern," she explains in an article by Patio and Hearth Products Report. "Instead, they are livable, soft colors that partner well with many other hues to inspire looks that could be termed transitional or soft modern," she says. Yellow, orange and Pantone's 2011 color of the year, honeysuckle, complement these cooler neutrals well.

Whimsical patterns also will be popular in the coming years, in addition to textured fabrics, damasks, ethnic motifs like ikats and natural motifs such as leaves, trees and twigs, according to Patio and Hearth Products Reports.
